Don't ever take a hockey tournament game for granted, I think Confucius said that to his monks one time. The Mildcatters certainly learned the truism of that at the Inaugural Toyota Center Novice Round-up by taking home the title after tying the championship game on Sunday. The tournament rules did not provide for any overtime periods or shootouts. The rules read that the first tie breaker was previous record against that team, and that came into play. The night before, in another hard fought, and somewhat "chippy" battle, the Mildcatters got the best of the Willowbrook Flame Throwers 5-2. The following morning, the two teams faced off in the championship matchup and the tide was turned. The Flame Throwers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on throughout the entire game. Late in the game, the Mildcatters put their first goal in the net, but it wasn't until the last minute, and after pulling the goalie for an extra attacker, that the Mildcatters tied the game with only 17 seconds remaining. Under the run-clock rules, time kept ticking off and the Flame Throwers failed to call their only timeout and the buzzer sounded crowning the Beaumont Mildcatters as the All-City Champions for 2009.
